Birthstone Book Tag – February

The birthstone tag is back! And February is all about royalty.

And amethysts.

FEBRUARY’s birthstone is AMETHYST – PURPLE IS ASSOCIATED WITH ROYALTY so NAME A BOOK WITH REGAL QUALITIES…YOU CAN BASE THIS OFF OF CHARACTERS Or CHOOSE THE KING OF ALL BOOKS

Choosing the King of all books might be a bit of a tall order, but I’m sure I can come up with something.

For this tag I am choosing Robin Hobb’s Farseer trilogy (or just, you know, Robin Hobb in general because she is a Queen amongst authors).

This is the first of a series of inter-connected trilogies focusing on the Kingdom of the Six Duchies. The protagonist Fitz (FitzChivalry Farseer) is the bastard child of Prince Chivalry who abdicates the throne after discovering the existence of Fitz. Fitz is trained as an assassin in the employ of the royal family, who name themselves after virtues; King Shrewd, Prince Regal, and Prince Verity being just a few.

The series follows Fitz from childhood, trying to survive in a dangerous royal environment where he is constantly denigrated for his parentage, and his slow realisation that his blood carries strange powers that could get him killed.

Love and loyalty are major themes of the books, and dedication to one’s King mean personal sacrifice at every turn. Oh, and there’s a hoard of Red Ships raiding the coastlines, leaving zombified husks as the only survivors. So there’s THAT.

Strange magics, royal intrigue, truly obnoxious and seemingly untouchable bad guys (I’m looking at you Regal, you SOB), but also wolves. Wolves are awesome. It’s a series close to my heart. My tender, shredded heart.

I don’t know about the king of books but when you say ‘royalty’ a series definitely comes to mind…

Mare is a red in a world of silvers – super-powered elites who look down on the ordinary commoners. One day by accident Mare discovers she has powers, in front of a whole arena of silver royalty. To cover up that an ordinary red girl has gifts, the ruling family pretend that Mare is Mareena Titanos, a lost silver princess, raised by reds.

This whole book is filled with scheming and backstabbing royals…along with a few genuinely good ones. But mostly the royals range from stuck up and sly to outright evil. A whole court full of mean people, with the coolest super powers. If you hadn’t guessed, this is my kind of book.
